The process

Calculated before it is made.

  1. A clear liquid filling a steel-ringed optical mold.
    01

    Liquid monomer · optical mold

    Cast

Liquid monomer is precisely filled into an optical mold.

  2. A thick, clear lens blank resting on a warm-lit surface.
    02

Front finished · back left thick

    Blank

The material is polymerized into a thick, clear lens blank.

  3. A clear lens blank held on a bolted steel fixture, a fine point descending to touch the center of its surface.
    03

One surface map · one order

    Calculate

Your prescription and design are mapped onto the back surface.

  4. A diamond point cutting the back of a clear lens blank, fine droplets thrown from the turning surface.
    04

Back surface · every made-to-order lens

    Surface

A diamond tool cuts the prescription and freeform design into the back surface.

  5. Lenses held in the dome of a vacuum coating chamber.
    05

UV protection to 400 nm · 12-month coating warranty

    Coating

Anti-reflective layers are laid down in a vacuum chamber, over the hard coat.

  6. A thin finished lens standing on its edge on a dark surface, its slim polished rim catching the light, the CLIFF mark etched faintly on the glass.
    06

    Fitted by your optician

    Finish

A finished lens — clear, precise, made for one prescription.

  13. A cylindrical lens focusing a beam of light into a thin bright line instead of a point.
    Optical glossary

    Cylinder (CYL)

The correction for astigmatism, where the eye's optics focus light along two different lines instead of one point. Always paired with an axis.

  14. An optician's trial frame with two round lenses on a dark desk, light passing through them in two bright rings.
    Optical glossary

    Axis

    Pupillary distance (PD)

The distance between your pupil centers in millimeters. It positions each lens's optical center in front of each eye; errors cause strain even with a correct prescription.
